Moving house with a cat
Before: keep the world normal
Cats read the packing chaos long before moving day. Keep feeding times, play sessions and sleeping spots as normal as you can while boxes accumulate. Leave the carrier out from week one so it's scenery, not a warning - ideally with the carrier training already done. If your cat boards or day-camps elsewhere on moving day, book it early; that's a legitimate low-stress option for the loudest day.
Moving day: one closed room
- Pick a room that gets emptied last (a bathroom works). In the morning: cat goes in with food, water, litter, bed, toys and the carrier.
- Tape a note to the door - "CAT INSIDE, DO NOT OPEN" - for movers and helpful friends.
- When everything else is loaded, carrier the cat, and the cat rides with you in your car, climate-controlled, not in the moving truck.
- At the new place, one room gets set up first as base camp: litter, food and water away from the litter, bedding that smells like the old home, a hiding spot. Cat goes in, door stays shut while the truck unloads.
After: expand the map slowly
Let the base camp be home for a day or a few days - shy cats longer. Then open the door and let the cat explore on their own schedule, one zone at a time, always able to retreat. Scatter feeding or hiding treats in new rooms builds positive associations. Watch the basics: eating, drinking, litter box use. A cat not eating for a day after a move needs a vet call, not more time. Rubbing a soft cloth on the cat's cheeks and then on furniture corners spreads their own scent and marks the new space as theirs - a trick behavior sources commonly suggest.
Outdoor cats: slow the map change
If your cat goes outdoors, keep them inside the new home for weeks, not days, so the new address becomes "home" in their map - cats have returned to old houses miles away. When outdoor time resumes, supervise the first outings and consider a harness walk first. Microchip details and tag addresses should be updated on day one, before any door opens.
